What does it mean to be under the law?

"For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law but under grace. ... And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness." Romans 6:14, 18.

How would being under the law give sin dominion over us?

The law declares us to be enemies of God because we are sinners. It condemns us to be cut off from God's favor and abandons us to the dominion of sin. Grace puts us at peace with God, restores us to His favor, and opens the way back to the dominion of righteousness.
